Japan's Yen Plunges to Near 40-Year Low Amid Geopolitical Tensions and Structural Weakness

The Japanese yen has fallen to near a 40-year low against the U.S. dollar, prompting market analysts to point to structural problems in Japan's economy as the underlying cause.

While short-term external shocks have contributed to the yen's decline, experts say the deeper issues include a wide interest rate differential between the United States and Japan, compounded by geopolitical tensions that are pushing the U.S. dollar higher.

Akira Nakaminato, a visiting professor at Tama University, noted that Japanese companies shifted production overseas in the past due to exchange rate considerations, but also to stay close to local markets. Today, structural challenges such as a shrinking labor force and concerns over energy supplies are undermining incentives for manufacturers to bring production back to Japan.

The yen's traditional status as a safe-haven asset during periods of geopolitical turmoil has weakened, with analysts attributing this to Japan's heavy reliance on the Middle East for imports of oil and other petroleum products. Prolonged disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have pushed up global oil prices, increasing Japan's energy import costs and widening its trade deficit.

Market watchers believe that the traditional boost a weaker yen once gave to exports is fading, and that the dual pressures of rising import costs for energy and raw materials and sluggish domestic demand will make it difficult for the yen to recover.
