JGB Yields Slide on Fed and BOJ Nerves
Japanese government bond yields fell on Tuesday as markets awaited key decisions from the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan. The 10-year benchmark yield slipped to 2.760%.
The move was largely driven by lower US Treasury yields, which eased overnight due to investors reassessing growth and inflation risks. Oil prices also played a role, flipping between relief and worry around the Middle East and fresh US inventory data, which affects inflation expectations that influence interest-rate pricing globally.
As markets wait for the Fed's decision and the BOJ's signals, some analysts are warning of a possible 'risk-off' mood. This could lead to a 'twist steepening' in the yield curve, where investors pile into short maturities for safety while demanding extra compensation to hold very long bonds.
Keisuke Tsuruta at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities noted that this scenario could produce higher yields on ultra-long bonds even if the BOJ keeps its policy rate steady and sounds hawkish. The real action may be in the gap between short-term and long-duration JGB pricing, which can stress trades tied to long-duration JGB pricing.
