Job Market Stagnation: Highly Educated Workers Struggle to Find Employment
The job market in the US is experiencing an unusual trend, where highly educated workers are finding it increasingly difficult to secure employment. According to a lesser-known statistic called the job-finding rate, this decline has been most pronounced among prime-age and college-educated workers.
Research by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco found that the job-finding rate, which measures the percentage of unemployed people who find work in a given month, has been deteriorating since 2022. In July, the rate stood at 24.2%, close to its 25-year average of 24% but well below its recent peak of 32.7%.
Research advisor Marianna Kudlyak noted that the decline in job-finding rates among highly educated workers is 'unusual' and suggests something other than a standard cyclical slowdown may be happening in the labor market.
