Jobs Data to Take Center Stage Amid Fed Interest Rate Uncertainty

The Federal Reserve's last meeting left markets in limbo regarding interest rate decisions. The upcoming jobs data could provide more clarity, but the market still views the September FOMC decision as a coin toss between holding and hiking rates.

While recent activity indicators show stronger momentum, the signals for the jobs market are mixed. The employment subcomponent of the services ISM was particularly weak, while weekly initial claims numbers have been undershooting expectations lately.

The median consensus for Friday's release is looking for a non-farm payrolls increase of 80k, although there appears to be a clustering around a slightly lower number of 75k. The unemployment rate is expected to stay at 4.2%. Market optimism remains upbeat, with real interest rate components keeping longer-term rates elevated.
