Jobs Growth Surprises, Rate Hike Odds Spike to 65%
The US jobs market delivered a stronger-than-expected performance in August, adding 162,000 non-farm jobs. This figure far exceeded economists' predictions of around 56,000 new jobs.
The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1%. The surprise labor market data has shifted expectations for the Federal Reserve's next policy move, with traders increasing the implied probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike in September to about 65% from 55% before the report.
A strong jobs market can push up prices, particularly if businesses struggle to keep up with demand. This pressure can increase the case for raising interest rates or maintaining higher rates to control inflation.
