Jobs Report Hides Uneven Recovery Behind Strong Numbers
The latest jobs report may have surprised economists and Wall Street with its strong numbers, but a closer look reveals an uneven recovery.
The economy added 162,000 nonfarm payrolls in August, exceeding expectations of just 65,000. However, the distribution of these new jobs paints a more complex picture.
Low-wage service sectors and government hiring drove the bulk of the gains, with food services and drinking places pouring 59,000 new positions into the total, while local government education added another 42,000 jobs.
The information sector, on the other hand, shed 23,000 positions, continuing a brutal stretch for tech, publishing, and data processing roles. This divergence matters, as it signals a consumer economy still spending at restaurants but corporate boardrooms that remain cautious about white-collar expansion.
