JPY Surges as US Payrolls Contract and US Dollar Tumbles
The Japanese Yen surged as US payrolls contracted, causing the US Dollar to tumble. The USD/JPY pair fell to 157.40 on Friday, down 0.65% from the previous day's close. This decline was driven by a weaker-than-expected US employment report, which showed a decline of 23K jobs in July, compared to market expectations of an increase of 80K.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that Nonfarm Payrolls declined by 103K jobs due to revisions to previous months. Despite this, the Unemployment Rate edged down to 4.1% from 4.2%. The Labor Force Participation Rate slipped to 61.4% from 61.5%, and annual Average Hourly Earnings growth slowed to 3.2% from a revised 3.4%.
Investors reduced their expectations of the Federal Reserve tightening monetary policy in September, causing the US Dollar to weaken sharply. The CME FedWatch Tool showed that the chances of a 25-basis-point rate hike at the September meeting fell significantly.
