July Employment Report Misses Mark with 23K Jobs Lost

The US employment report for July showed a significant decline in job numbers, falling short of expectations. According to the data, nonfarm payroll employment shed 23,000 jobs in July, compared to June's gain of 20,000. This figure is lower than the projected addition of 85,000 jobs, indicating a weaker-than-expected labor market. The unemployment rate decreased to 4.1% in July, while the U6 unemployment rate dropped to 7.9%. Notably, the labor force participation rate has been declining and now stands at its lowest level since early 2021 at 61.4%.
