July Jobs Report Shows Surprise Decline in Payroll Employment

The July jobs report revealed a decline in nonfarm payroll employment by 23,000, marking a reversal from the average monthly gain of 34,000 over the past year. This was a surprise to forecasters who had predicted an increase of approximately 83,000.

The unemployment rate decreased to 4.1 percent, down from June's rate and last July's rate of 4.3 percent. The number of people counted as unemployed fell by 178,000 to 6.9 million.

The revisions to May and June's employment numbers had a more significant impact on the overall picture, with May's gain reduced by 66,000 and June's revised down by 37,000. This resulted in a net reduction of 103,000 from the initially reported numbers.
