Kalshi Markets Predict 76% Chance of No Interest Rate Hike from Federal Reserve
Kalshi traders are forecasting a strong likelihood that the Federal Reserve will hold interest rates steady at its July meeting, with a 76% probability of no change and a 25% chance of a 25-basis-point hike. This prediction tracks closely with futures traders on the CME FedWatch, which shows a 71.7% probability of a hold and a 28.3% chance of a hike.
According to CNBC's Jessica Dickler, Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh is expected to hold interest rates steady, despite higher energy prices and renewed tensions with Iran having complicated the picture. Inflation has exceeded the Fed's 2% target since 2021, although an unexpected decline in June provided some relief.
Several factors are weighing against a rate increase at this meeting, including Warsh's pledge to end the practice of 'forward guidance', which involves signaling intended rate decisions before FOMC meetings. Additionally, President Trump has repeatedly called on the Fed to lower rates, and a rate hike would run counter to the White House's stated position.
Warsh faces a divided FOMC, with three or four voting members prepared to call for immediate rate increases. The path to a hold is not without friction, but Kalshi markets predict a 76% chance of the Fed maintaining current interest rates and a 25% chance of a 25-basis-point hike.
