Kashkari Advocates for Gradual Rate Hikes to Combat Persistent Inflation
Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari believes the central bank should raise interest rates now to combat persistent inflation and prevent it from becoming entrenched. In an interview with CNBC, he noted that corporate earnings are strong, consumers are holding up, and the labor market remains steady. Despite these signs of economic health, Kashkari expressed concern about high inflation rates, which have stayed above 3% for several months.
Kashkari voted in favor of a 25-basis-point rate hike at last week's monetary policy meeting, where he was one of three Fed policymakers to dissent from the majority decision to keep rates unchanged. He emphasized that his call is not for dramatic increases but rather a gradual approach to combat inflation.
Kashkari also stated that he values data-driven decision-making and would prefer to address inflation now through small rate hikes rather than waiting until later when more aggressive action may be needed. The next Federal Open Market Committee meeting, which will consider the rate hike, is scheduled for September 15-16.
