Kashkari Calls for Interest Rate Hike Amid Persistent Inflation Concerns
Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari has called for an interest rate hike to combat inflation. He was one of three dissenters who voted in favor of a 25-basis-point increase at last week's FOMC meeting, which ended with a 9-3 decision to keep rates unchanged.
Kashkari believes the central bank should raise interest rates now to avoid an entrenched inflation problem. He points out that corporate earnings are strong, consumers are holding up, and the labor market is stable. However, he notes that inflation remains above 3%, with a consumer price index (CPI) at 3.5% and personal consumption expenditures (PCE) index at 3.7%
Kashkari emphasized that he's not advocating for drastic rate increases but rather a gradual approach to curb inflation. He cited the recent Iran war, which has driven up energy prices and contributed to elevated inflation.
