Kashkari Defends Rate Hike Vote: 'Now Is The Time' To Gradually Increase Rates
Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari defended his vote to raise interest rates last week, saying that now is the time to gradually increase rates. Speaking with CNBC, Kashkari stated that the current monetary policy is not restrictive enough to combat inflation.
Kashkari pointed out that corporate earnings are high, consumers and labor markets are doing well, but there is evidence of supply-side shocks putting pressure on consumers. He emphasized that he does not see sufficient evidence of monetary policy being marginally restrictive right now.
Kashkari also highlighted the importance of getting inflation back down to 2%, arguing that waiting until later could lead to a more entrenched inflation problem and require aggressive rate hikes. Cleveland Fed's Beth Hammack echoed Kashkari's sentiments, stating that the Fed needs to act quickly to speed up the return of PCE inflation to its 2% objective.
