Katayama Keeps Mum on Joint Intervention Effectiveness
Japan's Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama declined to comment on the effectiveness of a joint currency intervention effort between Tokyo and Washington, according to Reuters. The move comes after an earlier statement from Katayama, who said that Japan and the US would not hesitate to take further action in coordinating their efforts to stabilize the Yen.
The USD/JPY exchange rate has seen a minor increase of 0.26% since the news broke out, trading at around 157.60 as of now. The Bank of Japan's policy divergence with other major central banks, particularly the US Federal Reserve, has historically influenced the value of the Japanese currency.
The Bank of Japan's ultra-loose monetary policy between 2013 and 2024 led to a depreciation of the Yen against its main trading partners due to increasing policy divergence. However, the gradual unwinding of this policy has provided some support to the Yen in recent times.
