Kazimir Flags Energy Price Concerns Ahead of ECB Meeting
ECB Governing Council member Peter Kazimir expressed concerns over gas and power prices, warning that the European Central Bank will consider all options at its next meeting to address inflation. Kazimir, who also heads Slovakia's NBS, is worried about energy costs, which have been hovering near €38 per megawatt-hour, significantly higher than the historical average of €15 to €20.
The euro has slipped over 0.5% to around 1.1535 against the US dollar, with derivative traders expecting heightened volatility in Euro-focused currency pairs. Historically, when ECB officials express public concern over utility costs, Euro implied volatility tends to rise by 10% to 15% over the following weeks.
Traders are advised to prepare for sharp price swings and consider using short-term options strategies like straddles to profit from these fluctuations. The ECB's next meeting will be crucial in determining its course of action, with Quantitative Easing a possible tool to address inflationary pressures.
