King Charles III Portrait Lands on New $20 Bank Note in Late 2027

The Bank of Canada is set to introduce a new $20 bank note featuring a vertical design, a portrait of King Charles III, and several security features that reflect Canada's history, culture, and natural environment.

The polymer note will enter circulation in late February 2027 and includes advanced dynamic security elements that change when the bill is tilted. The central bank encourages Canadians to check their bank notes using four steps: feel, look, tilt, and flip.

The new design features a purple security stripe with several dynamic elements, including a bubble that appears three-dimensional and magnifies the $20s inside it, as well as a maple leaf that pulses within another section. The note also includes gold maple leaves that contain a feature that pulses when the note is tilted.

The portrait of King Charles III on the front of the note reflects his advocacy for sustainable action and commitment to the environment. The design incorporates botanical elements, reinforcing Canada's connection to its monarch and natural environment.
