King Charles III Replaces Queen Elizabeth II on Canada's $20 Bill
The Bank of Canada has unveiled its new design for the $20 bank note featuring a portrait of King Charles III, replacing his mother Queen Elizabeth II who passed away on September 8, 2022 after a 70-year reign. The new bill will enter general circulation in February and is part of Canada's tradition of featuring the monarch on the $20 due to their role as head of state.
The design features King Charles in a vertically oriented format, similar to the $10 note which has featured Viola Desmond for years. Governor Tiff Macklem praised the new bill, saying it is 'striking, symbolic and secure' with advanced security features that prevent counterfeiting.
The $20 bill contains a tapestry of flowers and leaves around King Charles in a nod to his environmental dedication, as well as floral emblems of the 13 provinces and territories. A circular window on the front illustrates plants significant to Indigenous peoples, while the back remains an illustration of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial.
