King Charles III Replaces Queen Elizabeth II on Canadian $20 Bill
The Bank of Canada has unveiled its new design for the $20 bill, featuring King Charles III in place of Queen Elizabeth II. The monarch's portrait is surrounded by floral emblems representing Canada's provinces and territories, with a window showcasing culturally significant plants for Indigenous Peoples. This marks the first time since 1954 that Queen Elizabeth II will not be featured on the bank note.
Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem stated that King Charles's long-standing commitment to the environment is reflected in the design. The back of the bill features the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, symbolizing Canada's sacrifice in the First World War. This new design will begin entering circulation in February 2027.
The Bank of Canada was founded in 1935 and introduced bank notes that year, featuring Princess Elizabeth on the $20 bill until she was replaced by her father, King George VI, in 1937. Queen Elizabeth II returned to the note in 1954, coinciding with her new reign.
