King Charles III Takes Centre Stage on Canada's $20 Bill
The Bank of Canada has unveiled its new $20 bill, featuring King Charles III on the front and an illustration of the Vimy Ridge Memorial on the back. This marks the first time a monarch other than Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on Canadian currency since 1954.
The design is part of the Vertical series, which allows for more creative freedom in depicting the memorial without sacrificing space. The note will enter circulation in February 2027, replacing the previous $20 bill featuring Queen Elizabeth II.
According to Governor General Louise Arbour, the new bank note reflects Canada's sovereignty and its determination to define itself on its own terms. Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem describes the notes as 'complex works of art' that incorporate various elements, including floral emblems, culturally significant plants, and maple leaves.
The unveiling has been met with praise from some, but others have criticized the Vertical design, calling it a 'TikTok orientation-ass bill.'
