King Charles Takes Center Stage on New Canadian $20 Bill

The Bank of Canada has unveiled its new $20 bill featuring King Charles III. This vertical banknote will replace the classic Queen Elizabeth II design that has been in circulation for decades, and it's set to enter circulation on February 27, 2027.

The portrait of King Charles is surrounded by a floral tapestry representing his dedication to the environment. The front of the bill also features provincial and territorial floral emblems, while a circular window showcases plants that are culturally significant to Indigenous peoples in Canada.

The back of the note remains largely unchanged, still featuring an image of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France as a tribute to Canada's military contributions. However, this new $20 bill boasts advanced security features that have never been used on Canadian currency before.

'This new $20 banknote is striking, symbolic and secure,' said Tiff Macklem, the Bank of Canada governor. The design was the result of extensive consultations with Canadians, government partners, accessibility groups, and organizations connected to the memorial at Vimy Ridge.
