Kiwi Surges as RBNZ Hike Bets Align with Weaker US Dollar
The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) strengthened against the US Dollar on Tuesday, trading near 0.5960 after a prior session pullback. Market expectations of a 25 bps RBNZ rate hike to 2.75% at the September 2 meeting have almost fully priced in.
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand's (RBNZ) policy decision on September 2 will include a new Monetary Policy Statement, following a period where expectations are already well established. Strategists at Brown Brothers Harriman noted that 'the next RBNZ policy decision, which also includes a fresh Monetary Policy Statement, is on September 2 and a 25bps back-to-back hike to 2.75% is virtually fully priced-in.'
The move higher in NZD/USD also reflected ongoing weakness in the US Dollar, weighed down by the US Treasury's decision to expand its repurchase operations for longer-duration government debt. According to reports, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent may utilize as much as $1 trillion from the Treasury General Account to fund these buybacks.
