Kiwi Tumbles Below 0.5900 as China's Economic Slowdown Bites
The New Zealand Dollar plummeted to a session low of 0.5875 against the US Dollar on Monday after China's industrial production growth unexpectedly slowed in July. The disappointing data reignited concerns about China's economic recovery, which has been uneven despite policy support.
China's National Bureau of Statistics reported that industrial production expanded 5.1% in July from a year earlier, missing the 5.2% consensus estimate and decelerating from June's 5.3% pace. Retail sales rose just 2.7%, well short of the 3.1% forecast.
The slowdown has significant implications for New Zealand, which relies heavily on China as a major export market. A weaker currency can boost exports by making them cheaper in foreign markets, but it also raises inflationary pressures by increasing the cost of imported goods.
