Koch Warns Reserve Bank: No Fourth Rate Hike on Australian Households
Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Michele Bullock has warned households of a potential fourth cash rate hike due to stubborn above-target inflation. However, David Koch, economic director at Compare the Market, is urging the Reserve Bank not to hit households with another rate rise.
Koch argues that Australian households are already struggling with fuel and grocery price pressures, which are largely outside their control. He believes a fourth rate hike would be a 'triple whammy' for these households, adding to their financial burden.
According to Koch, the current inflation is not caused by consumers spending too much, but rather by external factors such as rising petrol prices due to the conflict in the Middle East. He suggests that the federal government should reduce its spending instead of increasing interest rates to help bring down inflation.
The Reserve Bank will meet again next week to discuss the cash rate, and the latest inflation figures have surprised the market, with headline inflation cooling from 4% in the 12 months to May to 3.8% in June.
