Korean Won Hovers Near 1,450 as FOMC Meeting Looms
The US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting and the advance estimate of US second-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) are on the horizon, setting up a tense standoff in foreign exchange markets. The USD/KRW exchange rate is expected to face gradual downward pressure, trading in the mid-to-upper 1,400 won range due to favorable supply-demand conditions in South Korea's domestic forex market.
The Korean Won has hovered near 1,450 per dollar, with a weekly decline of 27.50 won since July 25. The Bank of Korea's ongoing rate-hiking cycle and the expanding current account surplus fueled by robust semiconductor exports are supporting downward pressure on the USD/KRW rate.
Market attention is focused on the FOMC meeting scheduled for July 28-29, where the Federal Reserve is likely to hold its benchmark interest rate steady. However, there is speculation that it may maintain a hawkish stance in response to rising oil prices driven by Middle East instability and potential inflationary pressures.
