Kospi Plunges Amid Escalating Tensions and Soaring Oil Prices
The Kospi stock market index in South Korea opened lower on Thursday due to escalating tensions in the Middle East and rising oil prices. This caused inflation concerns, especially ahead of key U.S. data releases.
U.S. stocks had already ended lower overnight amid the same factors, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling 0.77% and the Nasdaq Composite declining 0.64%. The Kospi itself dropped by 12.79 points, or 0.18%, to 7,038.85 at the opening bell.
Rising oil prices are fueling worries about inflation and potentially leading to interest rate hikes from the U.S. Federal Reserve to combat price gains.
