KOSPI Plunges Over 3% Amid Rate Hike Fears
The KOSPI plummeted over 3% on August 31st in response to hawkish remarks by U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, with investors becoming increasingly concerned about a potential rate hike.
U.S. Treasury yields rose sharply, causing technology and semiconductor shares to drop, which had a ripple effect on South Korean stocks.
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix were among the hardest hit, falling 3.89% and 4.48%, respectively.
Han Ji-young, a researcher at Kiwoom Securities, noted that Warsh's comments emphasized the Fed's dual mandate of price stability and full employment, and suggested that it was too early to determine whether semiconductor sentiment would improve in light of upcoming earnings reports from Broadcom and South Korea's August exports.
