Korea's stock market, represented by the KOSPI index, surged past 7,000 for the first time in recent history. The rally was led by AI and semiconductor stocks, with Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) and SK Hynix (000660.KS) at the forefront. These shares rose 1.48% and 4.85%, respectively.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index also gained 1.3% overnight, further boosting investor confidence in these sectors. According to Park Yeon-joo, research head at Mirae Asset Securities, AI investment and earnings growth at major chipmakers will be crucial for the KOSPI's ability to maintain its position above 7,000.

Other South Korean stocks also saw gains, including Hyundai Motor (1.52%) and Hanwha Aerospace (2.24%). However, not all markets shared in this optimism: Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 0.6%, while Australia's benchmark slipped about 0.3%.

The yen continued to strengthen, trading around 153.3 per dollar, its strongest level since February. This has implications for Japan's exporters, who may see reduced earnings from overseas due to the stronger currency.
