Kumamoto Quake Causes No Major Financial Disruption, Says BOJ Governor

Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda reported that the recent earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture has caused no major disruption to the financial system. The powerful quake, which measured up to 7 on Japan's seismic intensity scale, struck the prefecture earlier this week.

The BOJ governor stated at a press conference that while some bank branches and automated teller machines have been suspended, there has been no major disruption to financial functions such as settlements and cash supply. The Bank of Japan has asked financial institutions to take steps to ensure a smooth supply of cash in areas affected by the disaster.

Kumamoto hosts several factories for semiconductors and other products, and roads and other infrastructure in the prefecture suffered damage from the earthquake. Ueda mentioned that the BOJ will 'closely monitor' developments including production halts.
