Lagarde Bats Away French Presidential Rumors, Pledges Pro-European Advocacy

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has clarified her stance on France's 2027 presidential campaign, stating she is not a candidate but will advocate for pro-European values in her home country. In an interview with Euronews TV channel, Lagarde emphasized the importance of Europe as a framework for member states to operate within.

Lagarde's comments come after she mentioned last week that it was possible she would leave the ECB early to weigh in on French politics. When asked how she would do this, Lagarde said she would 'explain that in whichever capacity I will be most efficient.'

The recent rise in euro zone inflation has led the ECB to raise interest rates for the first time in nearly three years. Lagarde noted that the ECB's medium-term orientation means it only needs inflation to return to its 2% goal in three years.
