Lagarde Calls for Public Spending Cuts to Fund Defense, Energy, and AI Investments
European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde is calling on governments to cut back on certain public spending items in order to fund essential investments in defense, energy transition, and artificial intelligence. According to Lagarde, this would allow them to maintain their finances and preserve the balance of public accounts.
Lagarde emphasized that states must exercise strict control over public finances and ensure transparency in budgetary data, referencing Greece's financial crisis in 2008 as an example of what not to repeat. The ECB head also pointed out that the European Commission's fiscal rules now include 'flexibility valves' for certain investments, such as those related to defense, which allow for a period of between 5 and 7 years to redirect budget balance and return to equilibrium.
Lagarde also reiterated the importance of having 'European banking champions', large entities with sufficient scale to compete with major US banks. She noted that every year 300 billion euros leave Europe, largely invested in the US, and called for progress towards a 'fluid, liquid, deep, efficient capital market' with a single set of rules and harmonized supervision.
