Lagarde Departure Expected in September as ECB Succession Drama Unfolds
Expectations are growing that European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde will announce her early departure in September. This would allow for a 'package deal' to be agreed upon by EU leaders, choosing new board members including Lagarde's successor and fellow board members Philip Lane and Isabel Schnabel.
The selection process is complex, with domestic and international factors influencing the chances of the three main candidates: Pablo Hernández de Cos of Spain, Klaas Knot of the Netherlands, and Joachim Nagel of Germany. According to an OMFIF eligibility poll, Nagel has a strong chance, albeit with different strengths compared to his competitors.
Lagarde's decision not to quit this year was validated by recent events, including the flare-up of hostilities in the US-Israeli war with Iran and the subsequent increase in oil prices. This turbulence makes it unwise for her to leave now, as bringing in a new president could destabilize the ECB.
Nagel is seen as a continuity candidate due to his uninterrupted presence on the ECB council since January 2022. In contrast, Hernández de Cos and Knot have been absent from deliberations for over a year, serving as governors or presidents of their respective central banks.
