Lagarde Eyes WEF Presidency Amid Leadership Transition
Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), has been named as a potential future leader of the World Economic Forum (WEF). According to Swiss newspaper NZZ, Lagarde was described at a recent board meeting as a 'putative candidate' for the presidency, and she stated that she is 'ready to serve'. The WEF's current co-chairs, Roche vice-chairman André Hoffmann and BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, are navigating a leadership transition after founder Klaus Schwab stepped down last year.
The board meeting saw Singapore's President Tharman Shanmugaratnam suggest that the succession to Fink and Hoffmann should be resolved internally, as suitable candidates were available. Lagarde has been a member of the WEF's 28-strong board for several terms and expressed gratitude for the members' confidence in her.
The exact timing of any potential leadership change was not determined at the meeting, but it was agreed that Fink and Hoffmann would still chair the annual Davos gathering in January 2027. Lagarde's eight-year term as ECB President is set to end in October 2027, with speculation surrounding her future role.
