Lagarde Faces Staff Pressure Over Future at ECB Amid Leadership Speculation

ECB staff have sent a letter to President Christine Lagarde demanding clarity on her future. The letter, seen by AFP, warns that uncertainty could undermine trust in the institution. Media reports have linked Lagarde to the top job at the World Economic Forum, which holds its annual conference in Davos each January.

Speculation suggests she may step down before her term expires in October 2027 so that French President Emmanuel Macron can choose her successor. Asked about her future at an ECB press conference last week, Lagarde said 'there is nothing to report'. However, the Financial Times reported yesterday that euro zone leaders are trying to overhaul leadership at the bank by the end of this year.

The letter from the ECB's staff committee calls for 'appropriate clarity regarding potential leadership transitions'. This would address internal staff concerns about promotions and recruitment, as well as ensure trust in ECB communications. Experience shows that transitions at Executive Board level can delay or dilute internal reform, according to the letter.
