Lagarde Sees AI-Driven Economic Boost of €630 Billion for Eurozone

Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), has outlined her vision for Europe's economic future. Speaking at the Apple Festival in Normandy, she highlighted the potential benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) to boost the Eurozone economy by a staggering €630 billion annually over ten years.

This amounts to approximately €1,800 per person, according to estimates from ECB economists. Lagarde emphasized the need for European companies to channel savings into investments and deepen the single market to ensure these benefits reach society.

The ECB President also noted that poorly integrated capital markets have led to a 'brain drain' of talent, with over 400 non-European companies founded by Europeans having a total value of €1.8 trillion. However, she pointed out that successful European initiatives like the Scaleup Europe fund can stimulate business development through local capital.

Lagarde also discussed barriers to European services, stating that internal obstacles in the digital sphere are equivalent to tariffs of around 100%. She stressed that Europe's openness makes it more exposed to international shocks, citing the energy crisis, Russia's war against Ukraine, and new US tariffs as examples.
