Lagarde Sounds Alarm on European Vulnerability to AI Disruptions
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde warned that Europe faces an unprecedented risk of being cut off from artificial intelligence technology, which is currently largely imported from the US.
Lagarde emphasized that European firms invest heavily in AI but mostly rely on foreign suppliers, leaving them vulnerable to disruptions or changes in access terms. She noted that if access to AI were restricted, it would have far-reaching consequences for various sectors, including finance, healthcare, and transportation.
To mitigate this risk, Lagarde advocated for Europe to become a producer of AI technology, citing potential benefits such as increased productivity and efficiency gains. According to her estimates, AI could boost productivity by up to 4% over the next decade, which would be transformative for public finances.
