Lagarde Stays Put, Defying Speculation on Early ECB Exit

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has stated that she expects to complete her term, which ends in October 2027. This announcement comes amid speculation about an early resignation, potentially allowing French President Emmanuel Macron a say in filling the position before next year's election.

Lagarde emphasized the importance of consolidating the ECB's accomplishments and ensuring price and financial stability. She noted that her mission includes protecting the euro and making it solid and strong for Europe's future.

The speculation about an early resignation has been fueled by recent developments, including the unexpected departure of French central bank head François Villeroy de Galhau in June. Two other seats on the ECB's executive board will become available next year, further adding to the pressure.
