Lagarde Steps into French Election Debate Amid ECB Exit Speculation

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has added her name to France's presidential election debate by speaking at an annual event in Normandy. The appearance comes as speculation grows over whether she will leave the ECB before her term ends in October 2027.

Lagarde spoke at the Fête de la Pomme, a gathering of French political figures and presidential hopefuls hosted by Normandy regional president Hervé Morin. Her attendance has fueled questions over whether she intends to play a larger role in French politics, following her previous description of the French presidency as 'a terrible job.'

The ECB delivered a second interest-rate increase last week aimed at containing inflation pressures linked to the Iran war. Lagarde said that proposals by far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon to cancel French government bonds held by the ECB and Bank of France would be legally impossible and financially dangerous.
