Lagarde Stresses Eurozone Resilience Amid Geopolitical Uncertainties
European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde is urging optimism despite geopolitical uncertainties caused by ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East, and Iran. The eurozone's economic growth is being driven by domestic demand, with a 1.5% expansion last year and continued growth of 0.4% quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter of 2026.
Lagarde acknowledged that the situation is far from ideal, citing the recent interest rate hike by the ECB and potential further adjustments in September. However, she emphasized the eurozone's resilience, highlighting its solid fundamentals, including a highly skilled workforce, world-class manufacturing capabilities, and a strong research and knowledge base.
The EU accounts for 6% of the world's population but produces 15% of its researchers and almost one-fifth of the most-cited scientific publications. Lagarde expressed confidence that Europe is well-positioned to leverage new technologies, with encouraging signs of investment in artificial intelligence (AI) among European businesses.
