Lagarde Warns Energy Shock to Intensify Further
European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde emphasized that the risks to inflation are now skewed towards the upside, with the energy shock likely to intensify further. She pointed out that if longer energy prices stay high, it could have second-round impacts on the economy.
Lagarde also mentioned that extreme weather events and the climate crisis could drive up food prices, making the current situation even more challenging. The ECB President noted that there had been some relatively benign developments since the June decision, including a quicker-than-anticipated post-MOU drop in Brent crude prices.
The energy shock has already led to higher inflation rates, with Lagarde stating that 'risks to inflation tilted to upside.' This development is significant, as it suggests that central banks may need to reassess their monetary policies to combat rising prices. The ECB's decision to keep key interest rates unchanged at the July policy meeting was seen as a cautious approach to address the current economic challenges.
