Lagarde Warns EU Must Seize AI Opportunities Amid Global Competitiveness
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde warned that Europe cannot afford to miss the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence in an increasingly competitive economic landscape. Speaking at a World Economic Forum event in Geneva, Lagarde emphasized that the European Union's failure to seize the first digital revolution must not be repeated in the face of the second digital revolution.
The current dominance of AI development by the US and China, with companies investing heavily in advanced technologies, poses a significant challenge for European firms. According to Lagarde, European businesses are hindered by market fragmentation within the euro area, limiting their ability to compete in a single market.
Lagarde also highlighted that Europe's post-war economic model, based on stable global order, cheap energy, and international trade, is eroding due to international changes, including US protectionist policies. She emphasized that it is crucial for Europe to adapt and invest in AI development to remain competitive.
