Lagarde Warns EU Vulnerable to AI Technology Disruptions

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has sounded the alarm about Europe's vulnerability to being cut off from artificial intelligence technologies. During a speech in Vienna, she warned that European companies are largely importing these technologies from abroad, particularly from the United States.

This makes them susceptible to disruptions in access or changes in terms, which could have far-reaching consequences for various sectors of the economy. Lagarde noted that AI will soon be used in border inspections, tax audits, traffic management, hospital monitoring, and bank payments.

She emphasized that losing access to these technologies would immediately impact all sectors and provide a significant bargaining chip for trading partners, potentially affecting negotiations on tariffs or taxes on digital services.

Lagarde believes that Europe's autonomy and productivity gains depend on becoming a producer of AI technologies. To achieve this, the continent needs to build up its own computing capacity and develop models that can operate independently without relying on foreign technology.
