Lagarde Warns of Harsh Reality Facing Europeans Amid Rise of Major Powers

Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), recently spoke at an official dinner in Berlin, Germany. She reflected on the city's rich history and how it has shaped Europe. The choice facing Europeans today is a critical one, according to Lagarde.

In her speech, Lagarde highlighted that Europe is entering a harsher world where major powers are willing to use their economic and geopolitical weight to their advantage. This requires EU Member States to make a decision about who they want to be as Europeans and whom they choose to rely on.

Lagarde presented three pathways for Europe: one, to accept its decline and become a museum of sorts; two, each country pursuing its own national interest without coordination; or three, choosing to build Europe together. She emphasized that the third pathway is the right choice, as it involves acting together in areas where it makes sense.

Lagarde also mentioned the importance of the European Union's structures for acting quickly and collectively. She stated that by combining their forces, European countries can play a major role in world affairs, contrary to what would happen if they dispersed and acted alone.
