Christine Lagarde's European Central Bank presidency may come to an end sooner than expected. Unlike most jobs, there is no formal procedure outlined in the rules governing the ECB for its chief to leave early.

The current head of the ECB has been at the helm since November 2019 and her term is set to expire in May 2027. However, a precedent was set by Wim Duisenberg, who served as ECB President from 1998 until his death in 2005. He resigned unexpectedly in 2003 and left office in November of that year.

Lagarde could potentially follow in Duisenberg's footsteps if she decides to leave her position early. However, the exact process for doing so is unclear. According to sources, there are no specific rules governing an early exit from the ECB presidency.
