Lagarde's Exit Paves Way for ECB Succession Power Struggle

Christine Lagarde is expected to announce her early departure from the European Central Bank (ECB) in a public statement after the ECB's governing council meeting in Berlin on September 10.

This would allow Lagarde, who has been president since 2019, to take up a post at an international organization, likely the World Economic Forum. Her scheduled departure date is October 2027, but she will leave early next year.

The ECB succession race remains open, with three main candidates: Pablo Hernández de Cos of Spain, Klaas Knot of the Netherlands, and Joachim Nagel of Germany. However, behind-the-scenes maneuvering may give way to a wider debate as political turbulence in France and Germany exacerbates fiscal policy concerns.

One factor holding back Hernández de Cos is worry about possible reputational damage to the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) if its leader leaves after a brief period. Some European BIS shareholders are concerned that the US administration might seek to put pressure on the Federal Reserve to use Hernández de Cos' early departure as an opportunity to introduce a US general manager.

Another option is François Villeroy de Galhau, former governor of the Banque de France, who has been trailed as a 'safe pair of hands' for the ECB succession. He combines strong political antennae with central bankerly charisma and a family background rooted in Franco-German linkages.
