Lane Rejects Tolerating Inflation to Ease Mortgage Burden
European Central Bank Chief Economist Philip Lane has spoken out against tolerating high inflation as a way to ease the burden on mortgage borrowers. In an interview on Irish radio station RTÉ Radio 1, Lane argued that allowing excessively high inflation would be a 'false economy.' He emphasized that the ECB should not refrain from raising interest rates due to concerns about the impact on mortgage borrowers.
Lane's comments come as some have suggested that the ECB should prioritize helping households affected by rising mortgage rates. However, Lane believes that tolerating high inflation would ultimately do more harm than good in the long run.
