Liberal Government's Big-Spending Plans Draw Transparency Concerns

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne has been criticized by analysts and critics for the Liberal government's big-ticket spending announcements this summer. The criticisms come as the government has committed to over $40 billion in new spending over the next decade, according to a note from Desjardins deputy chief economist Randall Bartlett.

The notes say that since the last fiscal update in April, Ottawa has made several large-scale commitments, including more than $40 billion in new spending. While John Fragos, spokesman for Finance Minister Champagne, would not confirm whether Bartlett's math is accurate, he stated that the urgent nature of global economic disruption led the government to advance key proposals outside the typical budget framework.

Conservative finance critic Michael Chong expressed concerns about the lack of transparency, calling the Liberal government the 'least transparent one Ottawa has seen in decades.' He warned that new spending will compound already rising deficits. Fragos countered by saying that the government has been very transparent and that its new capital budget framework provides Canadians with a clearer picture of how federal revenues are being invested to benefit the economy and workers.
