Lombardelli's Silence Sparks Interest Rate Watcher Concern

Clare Lombardelli, the deputy governor for monetary policy at the Bank of England, has been unusually quiet this year. Her last full speech on monetary policy was in May 2025, over a year ago.

Data compiled by Bloomberg shows that Lombardelli attended just two events this year, tying with other Monetary Policy Committee members for fewest appearances. Only one of those events was related to interest rates, and she spoke as part of a panel of five.

Lombardelli took on the responsibility of communicating with authority and credibility to Parliament, the media, the markets, and the wider public when she joined the Bank of England in July 2024. However, her relative silence has raised eyebrows among BOE rate watchers who are eager for more information from her.
