Loonie Holds Firm as BoC Signals No Imminent Rate Cuts

The Canadian dollar has been holding steady against its U.S. counterpart due to robust labour market data and the Bank of Canada's hawkish stance, according to TD Securities analysts.

Recent employment figures from Statistics Canada have consistently beaten expectations, with job gains concentrated in full-time positions. This strength suggests that the Canadian economy is operating closer to capacity, giving the BoC room to maintain a more restrictive monetary policy than some of its peers.

The Bank of Canada has emphasized that inflation remains too high and that it needs sustained evidence of easing price pressures before considering loosening policy rates. This stance, coupled with resilient labour markets, has narrowed the interest rate differential between Canada and the U.S., making the loonie more attractive to yield-seeking investors.

TD Securities notes that USD/CAD is trading in a range-bound market, with support near 1.35 and resistance around 1.37. A breakout above or below these levels could determine the next significant move in the Canadian dollar.
