Luxon Accused of Being Out of Touch over Parent-Child Business Comment
New Zealand businesses are being accused of having a 'parent-child mentality' by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, who claims they rely too heavily on government support. The comment was made during a breakfast chat with the Rotorua Business Chamber, where Luxon said he has sat in boardrooms across New Zealand and heard business owners asking what the government will do instead of focusing on their own growth.
Luxon's comments were met with criticism from Labour, which accused him of being 'out of touch' and telling struggling businesses to 'grow up'. However, ACT Party leader David Seymour defended Luxon, saying his point was valid and that not all business owners are waiting for the government to solve their problems.
Seymour pointed out that past government policies had contributed to high inflation rates and borrowing costs, which have put a strain on businesses. He also noted that some businesses are more proactive in adapting to new technologies and market conditions.
