Macklem Defends Bank of Canada's Use of Replacement Workers Amid Labour Dispute

Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem is defending the central bank's use of replacement workers during a strike involving security officers. The decision was made after the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) said the Bank of Canada contravened the Canada Labour Code by using contractors from Pinkerton Consulting & Investigations and Garda Canada Security Corporation.

The CIRB released a similar decision earlier this month, stating that the central bank had also contravened the code by using the services of union members. In response to the criticism, Macklem wrote a letter to the president of the Canadian Labour Congress, stating that the Bank has never refused to comply with the orders of the board.

The use of replacement workers during the strike is a contentious issue, and the CIRB's decision highlights the complexities of labour relations in Canada. The Bank of Canada's actions have sparked debate about the role of central banks in resolving industrial disputes and the implications for Canadian workers.
